What is the Cut Line?
Understanding the golf cut line and how it affects your Fantasy Golf Majors strategy and scoring.
If you're new to golf, the cut line is one of the most important concepts to understand — especially in Fantasy Golf Majors, where it directly impacts your scoring and strategy.
What is a Cut?
After the first two rounds of a golf tournament (Thursday and Friday), only a certain number of players continue to the weekend. The rest are "cut" — they go home and don't play rounds 3 and 4.
The cut line is usually set at the score of the player in approximately 50th place (the exact number varies by tournament). Any player above that score is eliminated.
For example, if the cut line is +3, any player with a 2-round total of +4 or worse is eliminated from the tournament.
How the Cut Affects Fantasy Golf
In Fantasy Golf Majors, if one of your players misses the cut, they score 0 for rounds 3 and 4. Since lower scores are better, those are effectively "wasted" slots in your weekend picks.
This is why your Thursday/Friday picks are crucial — you're not just thinking about those two rounds, you're thinking about which players are safe to make the weekend.
The Substitution Rule
After the cut is confirmed, you're allowed to make one substitution — swapping out one of your 4 players for a new player who made the cut.
There's a catch: you receive a penalty equal to the cut line in strokes. If the cut is +3, your substitution penalty is +3 added to your total score.
This mechanic creates a fascinating decision: is the player you want to bring in good enough to overcome the penalty?
Strategic Implications
The cut line affects your entire strategy:
- Pick players likely to make the cut
- Carefully consider whether a substitution is worth the penalty
- Your captain assignment in rounds 1-2 impacts who makes the cut
